Cancellation & attendance

Notice and late cancellation

Customers must provide at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule a lesson without a late cancellation charge.

A cancellation made less than 24 hours before the lesson results in a $50 late cancellation fee.

A missed lesson with no notice results in the full scheduled 2-hour lesson being deducted from the package.

Late arrival

Students receive a 15-minute grace period. When a student arrives late, the lesson still ends at the scheduled time.

When a student is more than 15 minutes late without notice, the appointment is treated as a no-show and the full scheduled 2 hours are deducted.

When Start Right arrives late, the student receives the full paid lesson time.

If the student chooses to end a lesson early, the full scheduled lesson still counts. Start Right may approve partial credit for a documented emergency.

Refund policy

How refunds are calculated

Refunds are limited to the eligible unused balance after completed services and disclosed nonrefundable third-party or processing costs. Completed lessons are charged at the regular single-lesson rate of $195 per 2-hour lesson.

Example

A customer purchases 10 hours for $900 and completes 4 hours. Two completed 2-hour lessons are charged at $195 each, totaling $390. The eligible refund is $510.

Late cancellation fees, no-show charges, completed services, testing fees, third-party fees, processor fees, and other nonrefundable costs are excluded from refunds.

Package expiration and transfers

Unused package hours should normally be completed within 12 months of purchase.

After 12 months, unused hours do not automatically disappear. Start Right may approve an extension or process the unused balance under the refund policy.

Package hours remain assigned to the original student. Start Right may approve a transfer to another student in writing.

Weather and Start Right cancellations

Weather

Start Right reschedules a lesson without a fee when weather or road conditions are unsafe. No package hours are deducted for a weather cancellation made by Start Right.

Instructor or vehicle issues

When Start Right cancels because of an instructor or training vehicle problem, the lesson is rescheduled without a charge and no package hours are deducted.

When Start Right ends a lesson early because of an instructor or vehicle problem, only the completed time counts. Unused paid time is rescheduled without a charge.

When a student becomes ill or experiences a documented emergency during a lesson, Start Right reviews unused time case by case.

License and eligibility

Valid license required

Every student must present a valid physical learner license or driver license before every driving lesson. Only the physical card is accepted; digital or screenshot proof is not accepted.

When valid proof is not provided within 15 minutes of the scheduled start time, the lesson is treated as a no-show and the full scheduled lesson is deducted.

An expired, suspended, invalid, or otherwise unacceptable license prevents the driving lesson from taking place. The full scheduled lesson charge applies.

Start Right reviews the documents presented and does not independently verify government eligibility beyond that review.

Payment policy

How payments work

Single lessons must be paid in full before the scheduled lesson.

To receive a discounted package rate, the full package must be paid before the first lesson.

Afterpay is an accepted checkout payment method for eligible purchases. Afterpay is not an internal Start Right payment plan, and Start Right does not offer an internal pay-later arrangement.

Unpaid balances and returned payments

Future lessons may be paused while an unpaid balance remains. When the balance remains unpaid 24 hours before a lesson, Start Right may release the appointment. When payment arrives after the appointment has been released, the customer must reschedule.

Returned payments and chargebacks must be repaid before future lessons. The customer is responsible for the original unpaid amount and actual documented bank or processor fees.

Pricing policy

Price changes and quotes

Start Right may change prices for future purchases. Already-purchased packages keep their original price, included hours, and approved services.

Additional lessons purchased later use the current price at the time of purchase.

Written price quotes remain valid for 14 days. After 14 days, current pricing applies.

Scheduling and lesson time

Lesson blocks

Package lessons are normally scheduled in 2-hour blocks. Start Right may approve another lesson length.

Travel between approved pickup and drop-off locations counts as paid lesson time because instruction continues during the drive. When Start Right causes a non-instructional delay, the student still receives the full paid lesson time.

The instructor may change the route, training area, or planned skills based on traffic, weather, safety, and student readiness.

Pickup, drop-off, and service areas

Approved locations

Pickup and drop-off must remain inside the approved service area unless Start Right approves an exception. Locations outside the approved service area require advance approval and may include a travel fee agreed to before the lesson.

Pickup or drop-off changes require at least 24 hours' notice. A change made with less than 24 hours' notice requires Start Right approval. When the change is not approved, the original location remains in effect.

If the student is unavailable at the approved location, the late cancellation or no-show policy applies.

Lessons may begin and end at different approved locations, including home, school, or work. Both locations must be approved in advance.

Minor students

Parents and guardians

A parent or guardian does not need to be physically present at pickup or drop-off but must remain reachable by phone during the lesson.

Every student under 18 must provide an emergency contact before the first lesson.

When the lesson was previously confirmed and the parent does not answer at pickup, the lesson may proceed. When a safety issue occurs, the instructor contacts the parent, guardian, or emergency contact. When no responsible adult is reachable during a safety issue, the instructor may end the lesson and return the student to the approved location.

Passengers, observers, and vehicle conduct

Passengers

Lessons are private and one-on-one. Friends and siblings are not allowed to ride in the training vehicle. A parent or guardian may observe only with advance approval from Start Right.

Footwear and phones

Closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended. Other footwear is allowed only when safe pedal control is maintained. Loose slides, bulky sandals, high heels, or footwear that interferes with safe braking or acceleration are not allowed. The instructor has final authority to require different footwear. Delays caused by footwear do not extend the scheduled lesson time.

Student phones must remain put away while driving. Emergency phone use is allowed after the vehicle stops safely. Phone use for navigation or lesson purposes is allowed when directed by the instructor.

Food, smoking, vaping, alcohol

Food is not allowed inside the training vehicle. Smoking, vaping, and alcohol are not allowed. Water is allowed in a closed bottle.

Student safety and conduct

When Start Right may refuse or end a lesson

Start Right may refuse to begin or may immediately end a lesson when a student appears impaired, aggressive, threatening, medically unfit, or otherwise unsafe to drive. No driving is allowed in that situation, and the full scheduled lesson charge applies unless Start Right approves an exception for a documented emergency.

Start Right may refuse or end future service for repeated unsafe behavior, harassment, threats, non-payment, fraud, or repeated policy violations. Unused prepaid balances are handled under the refund policy after valid completed lessons and fees are deducted.

Weapons

Weapons are not permitted inside the Start Right training vehicle. Start Right may refuse or end a lesson when a weapon is present, and the full scheduled lesson charge applies. Start Right does not store or handle customer weapons. On-duty law enforcement situations require advance disclosure and Start Right approval.

Training vehicle

Which vehicle is used

Lessons normally use the Start Right dual-brake training vehicle. Any exception requires written advance approval after Start Right reviews insurance, documentation, and vehicle safety. An exception is not guaranteed.

Cleaning and damage

Normal wear does not result in a customer charge. Customers are responsible for documented cleaning, repair, or replacement costs caused by spills, smoking, vaping, intentional damage, or reckless behavior. Start Right provides photos, receipts, repair estimates, or other documentation.

For a minor student, the signing parent or guardian is responsible under the customer agreement.

Tolls, parking, and testing fees

Who pays what

Start Right covers normal tolls, parking charges, and testing site access fees connected to the scheduled service.

DMV and third-party testing fees are separate from Start Right service prices. Those fees are set by the DMV or testing provider, can change, and should be confirmed directly with that provider.

Road Test Day

What Road Test Day includes

Road Test Day costs $195. The service normally includes instructor time, training vehicle use, travel, a brief warm-up, and test day support.

The warm-up usually lasts about 15 to 30 minutes. Warm-up timing depends on traffic, arrival time, check-in, and the testing provider schedule. Road Test Day customers must arrive prepared — the warm-up is for brief review and preparation, not complete instruction on every driving skill.

Start Right does not guarantee a passing result. DMV and third-party testing fees remain separate.

Cancellations and retests

A customer cancellation made at least 24 hours before Road Test Day does not result in a Start Right cancellation fee. A cancellation made less than 24 hours before Road Test Day results in the full $195 charge. A Road Test Day no-show results in the full $195 charge.

When the DMV or testing provider cancels, Start Right reschedules the service without another Start Right charge.

When the student fails the test, another Road Test Day is a separate paid service. A student who does not pass may receive a one-time $50 discount on a second Road Test Day booked within 30 days — the discounted retest price is $145. The one-time retest discount applies once per student. After 30 days, the regular $195 price applies. Testing and licensing fees remain separate during a retest.

Safety decision on Road Test Day

Start Right may refuse use of the training vehicle when the instructor determines that the student cannot operate the vehicle safely or is not ready to attempt the road test. The scheduled appointment becomes a driving lesson and skills assessment.

The full $195 charge still applies because instructor time, vehicle time, travel, and the reserved appointment were provided. A future road test requires a new Road Test Day booking. The instructor has final authority over training vehicle use.

Documents, eligibility, and provider delays

Students are responsible for bringing all required documents and meeting DMV or testing provider eligibility requirements. Students should confirm required documents and eligibility with Start Right at least 24 hours before the appointment. Failure to confirm does not automatically cancel the appointment.

When the student cannot test because documents are missing or eligibility requirements are not met, the full $195 Road Test Day charge applies. When the DMV or testing provider causes the problem, Start Right reschedules without another Start Right charge. A documented emergency is reviewed case by case.

Start Right is not responsible for delays, cancellations, fees, or scheduling changes caused by the DMV or a third-party testing provider. Testing provider delays may reduce the available warm-up time. Priority is given to protecting the scheduled road test appointment and check-in time. No refund or credit is required for reduced warm-up time caused by the testing provider. When a Start Right delay reduces the promised service, Start Right provides replacement time or an appropriate credit.
